THERAPEUTIC INSIGHTS INTO THE LIPID LOWERING AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIONS OF CURCUMA LONGA

Abstract

Curcuma longa, commonly known as turmeric and belonging to the Zingiberaceae family, has been utilized in Asian countries for decades not only as a flavor or spice but also for medicinal purposes. Numerous experiments conducted on animals and humans have demonstrated its miraculous effects in treating various diseases. Extensive research has proven that turmeric possesses significant potential to prevent or cure certain diseases due to its antiviral, antibacterial, antioxidant, antitumor, antifungal, anti-flatulent, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, cardioprotective, anti-allergic, anticoagulant, and immunity-boosting properties. As the trend towards herbal medicines continues to grow, with people increasingly opting for traditional herbal products for the prevention and treatment of their ailments, researchers, research organizations, and pharmaceutical industries are actively exploring the non-revealed pharmacological uses of various herbs. Turmeric is available in various forms, such as tablets, capsules, creams, and ointments, and is consumed not only in underdeveloped countries but also in industrialized nations. This literature review aims to shed light on the antioxidant and anti-hyperlipidemic effects of Curcuma longa.
