Abstract

Molecular parasitology has transformed the way we understand how parasites function at the molecular level by combining genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics in one area of study. Advances in genomic technologies have allowed scientists to explore topics like evolutionary history of parasites, how parasites interact with their host, what makes them virulent and how they develop drug resistance with an unprecedented level of accuracy. Through comparative genomic analysis, researchers have begun to better understand how genetic variations (mutations) and the process of adaptive evolution support their ability to survive in a variety of environments and hosts. High-throughput sequencing technology and CRISPR-based gene-editing tools are now enabling researchers to rapidly identify genes that are essential for causing disease and for evading immune responses. These discoveries are critical to developing precision therapies for treating parasitic diseases, including: developing targeted anti-parasitic drugs, immunological treatment options (e.g., vaccines) and RNA-based approaches to reduce side effects and increase effective treatment of parasitic infections. In addition, the use of molecular diagnostics—including genomic biomarkers—to provide early diagnosis of parasitic infections and improve epidemiological surveillance of parasitic diseases is a developing field of research. Similarly, by integrating artificial intelligence with genome-based data sets, predictive modeling for the transmission of parasites and the response to treatment is also being improved. Even with these many advancements made in recent years, some of the major obstacles remain: genomic complexity, emerging resistance and access to affordable healthcare; however, the molecular nature of parasitology and innovations in genomics provide a powerful tool to gain a deeper understanding of the evolution of parasites and move towards personalized approaches to preventing, diagnosing and treating disease on a global scale.
