Abstract

Background: Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) is one of the most common interventions in the treatment of coronary artery disease; however, many patients undergo considerable physical and mental stress prior to undergoing this intervention.

Objectives: This case study was intended to use the Betty Neuman’s System Model in the pre-operative care of a patient scheduled for PCI and determine the efficacy of this approach in managing existing stressors.

Methodology:The patient, a 58-year-old male with coronary artery disease and 90% left anterior descending artery stenosis, was admitted for elective PCI. Stressors were found to be intrapersonal, interpersonal, and extrapersonal; among them were anxiety, fear, family issues, financial problems, and lack of awareness about the procedure. The interventions based on the Betty Neuman Systems Model included education, counseling, relaxation, physiological monitoring, emotional support, lifestyle change, adherence to medications, and discharge planning.

Results: After the intervention, the patient showed reduced levels of anxiety, increased awareness about the procedure, proper coping strategies, increased emotional stability, and physiological changes. The patient felt comfortable and ready for the PCI. Thus, it can be concluded that Betty Neuman Systems Model provides comprehensive care to patients prior to the surgery since it addresses different stressors and patient adaptation.

Conclusion: It can be concluded that Betty Neuman Systems Model can be applied to holistic pre-operative nursing care, taking into consideration different stressors and patient adaptation.
