EFFECT OF ORAL VS IV IRON SUPPLEMENTATION IN PATIENTS OF CKD 4 AND BEYOND NOT ON MAINTAINANCE HEMODIALYSIS

Objective: To compare the effect of oral and IV iron supplementation among patients with CKD stage 4 and 5 not on maintenance hemodialysis who had low HB recorded before administration.
Study Design: Observational cross-sectional study.
Place and Duration of Study: Department of Internal (General) Medicine, Pak Emirates Military Hospital, Rawalpindi, from November 2024 to April 2025.
Methodology: In this cross-sectional study, records of adults with CKD stage 4 or 5 not on maintenance haemodialysis were categorized according to current oral or intravenous iron exposure. Haemoglobin, ferritin, transferrin saturation, estimated glomerular filtration rate, treatment duration, adherence, and reported adverse effects were compared at the time of assessment.
Results: In the dataset, participants receiving intravenous iron had higher mean haemoglobin, ferritin, and transferrin saturation values than participants receiving oral iron. These cross-sectional differences describe associations at the time of assessment and do not prove causation.
Conclusion: In this cross-sectional study, intravenous iron exposure was associated with higher iron indices and haemoglobin values.
