Sleep Quality Among Post Graduate Residents At A Tertiary Care Center In Lahore, Pakistan

Sleep is a natural goal for every human being for optimum daily life functioning of both mind and body. Objective: To determine the sleep quality of residents working in Mayo Hospital, Lahore. Methods: It’s a cross sectional study that was held at Department of Psychiatry at Mayo Hospital, Lahore, following ethical approval. Total of 150 post graduate residents involving both genders were enrolled. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire was used in present study that measured sleep quality and disturbances over the previous months. All the data was processed by SPSS v27.0. Mean ± SD represented quantitative parameters. Chi-square test was applied to determine the association between different parameters with sleep quality with p-value (≤ 0.05) as significant. Results: Total of 150 postgraduate residents were having mean age as 29.0 ± 2.3 years. Based on PSQI, the mean global PSQI score was 7.67 ± 3.55, indicating overall poor sleep quality among the study population. Out of 150 residents, 108 (72.0%) were classified as poor sleepers (PSQI > 5), while only 42 (28.0%) had normal sleep quality. Overall association between specialty and sleep quality was not statistically significant (p = 0.861). Conclusion: We concluded that sleep disturbance was a common health issue faced by resident doctors across all specialties rather than confined to any specific discipline.
