Neurosonographic Evaluation of Intrcranial Abnormalities in Neonates Presentng with Seizures

Objective: This study objective was to evaluate the Intracranial Abnormalities in neonates presenting with seizures.
Method: This cross-sectional study included 79 neonates that presented with seizures in the NICU of a tertiary care hospital. Cranial ultrasound was performed using a high frequency transducer through the anterior frontanelle. Standard coronal and sagittal views were attained to access the structures of brain. Data were examined using SPSS version 26., with significance level set at p <0.05.
Result: The mean age was 11.24 days of patients. In this study, among the patients 22 (28%) neonates were detected with intracranial abnormalities out of which 50 (63%) were term and 28 (35%) were pre term neonates. Hemmorhage 12 (15.3%) and Hydrocephalus 7 (8.9%) were the most common findings, followed by cerebral edema 2(2.5%) and congenital abnormalities 1 (1%).
Conclusion: Neurosonography is a valuable, noninvasive, readily accessible and first-line tool for neonatal intracranial pathologies. On the basis of current study out of seventy-eight patients, twenty-two patients were detected with intracranial abnormalities in which Hemorrhage and hydrocephalus were the most common findings.
